“Gifts that help the community continue to thrive”
The Wessington Springs Area Community Foundation (WSACF) recently awarded grants to five area non-profit groups as part of its mission to help fund local organizations and projects which help keep Wessington Springs a desirable community in which to live and work, and to promote a thriving hometown for those who come to visit.
Awards for the fall grant cycle were given to: Wessington Springs Area Chamber & Development (WSACD) on behalf of Blackhawks Youth Football Club to help fund new helmets and equipment; FCCLA to help fund Avery Orth and Carissa Scheel’s senior projects; Wessington Springs Senior/Community Center to help fund needed building repairs, WSACD on behalf of Winter Park Activities to help fund equipment and updates to the skating rink; Build Springs, Inc. to help purchase new equipment for the rec center.
In its 25th year of serving the community, the Wessington Springs Area Community Foundation (WSACF) earlier this year set and achieved a “$25,000 for 25 Years” goal to celebrate the milestone.
The WSACF “community savings account” is an endowment fund that has a simple formula: donations made to the local fund stay invested forever and the earned interest is made available twice a year to local charitable or nonprofit groups.
Over the past few years, with the exception of one spendable donation, the average yearly available funds to award grants back into the community has been approximately $15,000. With an increase of the “$25,000 for 25 Years” goal, it is estimated that available funds to award grants will increase by about $2,000 per year — a sizable increase going to local organizations that serve the community.
