A host of volunteers orchestrated the highly anticipated “Leap to Lane” fundraising event again this year, which drew a record crowd of over 500 individuals to the small community last Saturday.
Now in its fourth consecutive year, the event proved to be a success featuring a diverse range of activities. Car enthusiasts were treated to an antique tractor and car show, while local fire departments wowed the crowd with water challenges. The air was filled with the sing-along tunes of oldies band Mogen’s Heroes, Juice Box, and the newly formed band from Wessington Springs, The Good Ole Boys, energized the audience with their live performances.
Attendees also savored delectable offerings such as a smoked whole hog donated and cooked by Jason Weber — which was gone in just 2.5 hours — grilled burgers and dogs from the Leap to Lane Committee and fair food from D&K Concessions.
Additionally, a silent auction, corn hole tournament and a fun zone for the kids added to the fun. New to this year’s event was the extremely popular face painting by local artist Kenzee Schafer.
“I can’t say enough about Kenzee Schafer. She worked her tail off painting all those kid’s faces for hours,” said Gray.
Also a new addition were horse-drawn wagon rides from Elton Kaus, which was a favorite for kids and adults alike.
The primary goal of “Leap to Lane” was to generate funds for Lane’s non-profit improvement organization, an initiative that aims to make improvements in Lane.
Gray, who also serves on the town council, shared his belief in the significance of fostering a sense of pride among residents.
“With so many small rural towns facing decline, it’s crucial that we take pride in our own community,” he emphasized. “The overwhelming support and positive feedback we received for Leap to Lane from local farmers, sponsors and attendees from neighboring communities is a clear testament to their hope in seeing Lane succeed and really renewed my energy to continue this event.”
Reflecting on the success of the event, Gray expressed his appreciation for all who contributed to the success of Leap to Lane.
“I sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed the festivities during Leap to Lane. It is our intention to continue this tradition and our ongoing efforts improve Lane. We could have never pulled off an event of this scale without a well-oiled crew. The people who volunteered to help with everything made this possible.”
