Community Invited to Shape Old Grade Trail Vision at October Meetings

Wessington Springs has been chosen as one of just two communities in South Dakota to participate in a new state initiative aimed at boosting tourism in rural areas. The Old Grade Trail project, selected through the state’s Destination Development Program, will now move into its next phase, and residents, nonprofits, and business leaders are being asked to play a direct role in shaping its future.

As part of this statewide initiative, consultants from George Washington University’s Institute for Tourism Studies will be in Wessington Springs October 7–10 for an in-person community visit. Their goal is simple: to listen, learn, and work alongside locals to create a tourism plan that reflects community priorities while strengthening Wessington Springs as a destination. Trail enthusiast and Chamber & Development board member Troy Duxbury said local input is essential.

“This project has always been about more than a trail. It’s about weaving together our community’s history, natural beauty, and gathering places in a way that serves both residents and visitors. To do that right, we need to hear directly from the people who live and work here.”

Two Key Meetings Scheduled

• Community Member and Non-profit Group Meeting Wednesday, October 8 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Springs Inn Café, Main Street, Wessington Springs

• Area Business Owner Meeting Thursday, October 9 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Springs Inn Café, Main Street, Wessington Springs Both sessions are designed to be informal and conversational. Attendees are encouraged to share their ideas, concerns and hopes for how the Old Grade Trail and tourism more broadly can connect with community needs.

A Call to Action

This recognition puts Wessington Springs on the map as a leader in shaping authentic small-town visitor experiences. But lasting success depends on local voices at the table.

Area residents, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to mark their calendars and attend. Lunch will be available for purchase at the Springs Inn Café during the meetings. Please confirm attendance by texting Troy Duxbury at 605-354-4804, including name and business (if applicable) in the message.
