Holiday Break Brings Tough Tests for Spartan Girls

The Wessington Springs Spartan girls suffered two tough losses over the Holiday Break.

On Monday, December 29 the Spartan girls basketball team took on Colman-Egan in the Huron Arena at the Huron Classic. Both teams came into the game with 4-0 records. The Spartans got off to a good start and held a 12-9 lead after one quarter of play. Colman-Egan got it going in the 2nd quarter by outscoring the Spartans 19-8 and Colman-Egan led 28-20 at halftime. The Spartans came out strong in the 3rd quarter and cut the lead to 4 points, but were unable to get any closer and Colman-Egan held 42-32 lead going into the final quarter. Again the Spartans were able to initially cut into the lead but could get no closer than 6 points and the Spartans were forced to start fouling and forcing shots and Colman-Egan was able to secure a 5742 win over the Spartans. Kenzie Kolousek led the way with 18 points. Kaitlyn Braun had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Kendall Kolousek had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Kerstynn Heim had six points and six rebounds.

On Saturday, January 3 the Spartan girls basketball team hosted the 5-0 Highmore-Harrold Pirates in a 281 conference game. Scoring was tough to come by for both teams all game long. The Spartans jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 2 quick 3-pointers from Masynn Mebius. The Spartans were able to hold an 8-6 lead after one quarter. Highmore-Harrold outscored the Spartans 9-6 in 2nd quarter and led the Spartans 15-14 at halftime. The Spartans took a lead early in 3rd quarter on a 3-pointer by Kerstynn Heim but scoring was hard to come by for the Spartans the rest of quarter and Highmore-Harrold led 25-20 going into the 4th quarter. The Spartans had a little run to start the 4th and took a one point lead. However it was short lived and Highmore-Harrold retook the lead and held on to defeat the Spartans by a score of 36-30. Kenzie Kolousek led scoring with 9 points. Kerstynn Heim had 7 points and 10 rebounds. Kendall Kolousek had 6 points and 9 rebounds. Masynn Mebius chipped in with 6 points.

The 4-2 Spartans have a busy week coming up. On Tuesday, January 6 the Spartans travel to Faulkton to take on the 5-1 Trojans. On Thursday, the Spartans will host another 281 game vs SBA. The Spartans finish the week with a trip to Ethan on Friday to take on undefeated and highly ranked Ethan Rustlers.
