Homecoming Week is one of the busiest and most anticipated weeks of the school year. From dressing up for theme days to competing in Powderpuff games, building floats and cheering on the school’s athletes, there is something happening almost every day. While the community sees the finished events, there is plenty happening behind the scenes to make Homecoming Week what it is.
Monday started with pajama day, giving students a chance to come to school in their most comfortable clothes. Students also gathered for a pep rally celebrating the volleyball and cross-country athletes. The pep rally included some competition between the athletes. The volleyball girls competed in a relay race where they had to slide across mats on the gym floor and back. The cross-country athletes had their own challenge, riding scooters to the end line and back while using plungers instead of their hands. The pep rally finished with the students joining together for cheers.
Tuesday brought Country vs. Country Club Day, giving students the choice between two completely different styles. During TAA, students also put their Disney knowledge to the test with Disney trivia.
Wednesday was Anything but a Backpack Day, which brought some creative alternatives for carrying school supplies. The day also featured a Powderpuff boys’ volleyball game. The championship was a competitive match between the seniors and the juniors; the seniors came away with the win.
Thursday was Disney Day, bringing another round of Disney themed outfits to the halls. During TAA,studentsandteachers switched roles for a game of “Guess that Student” and “Guess the Teacher.” The competition ended in a tie, leading to a tiebreaker. The students ultimately came out on the top. The day also included a volleyball trip to Lower Brule, where the volleyball team earned a win. But the night had one more surprise waiting for the Wessington Springs Spartans. The students who attended the volleyball game seemed to be surrounding the court, along with the Lower Brule students. It turned out the boys from each school were playing volleyball against each other, adding an unexpected ending to the night, as well as a memorable one.
Friday brought the day many students and community members look forward to the most: Spirit Day and float day. The day was busy with students working on their Homecomingfloats.Behind the finished floats were meetings for planning, building, decorating and working together to bring your class’s ideas to life. Before float building all students went down to the Elementary School for a pep rally for our football team. Classes then had a couple of hours to get their floats put together, until a second Powderpuff competition, this time with the girls taking the football field. The seniors and sophomores battled in a competitive game that ended in a tie, forcing teams into a kickoff competition. The seniors managed to get away with the win. Later, the parade marshals came to line up the floats, and the school day ended for the students after they tore down their floats.
Homecoming Week may look like five days of dress up themes and school activities, but behind every event are students, teachers, coaches and community members putting in time and effort. From building floats and organizing competitions to traveling for sporting events, and cheering from the sidelines, the week brings the school and community together.
