Although their reasons for choosing to study in the United States are very different for Spanish students Sofia Borras Mas, Patri Menendez and Carla Powell, they all agree that after a year in Wessington Springs, their minds and hearts are forever changed.

Around the country, EMS Week (May 15-21, 2022) honors the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s front line. Locally, the Jerauld County Ambulance rises to the challenge, bringing a vital service to area communities.
NYLA THORTON Nyla Thorton and her husband, Chuck, ran Thorton Drug. Grown-ups went there for various sundries. I knew it as the home of the town’s only comic book rack, a squeaking totem of adventure freshened every month. You could also order Nintendo games through the store, and time has never moved more slowly than when my buddies and I waited for a copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Re-published in the True Dakotan with permission from South Dakota Magazine, Austin Kaus and Bill Goehring We didn’t know Wessington Springs was cool. As teenagers we tried our best to juice it up with fireworks pranks, screeching tires and late-night electric guitar solos.

Weskota Foundation Awards Scholarships

The Weskota Foundation annually awards scholarships on behalf of Avera Weskota Memorial Hospital, Weskota Manor Avera and Jerauld County Community Health Center to high school seniors who are planning a career in a health care field.

While population decline in rural South Dakota may dominate the narrative of late, last month Wessington Springs experienced a baby boom — four girls born to area women within eight days!

From the halls of WSHS we bring a newly completed project by Advanced Art I student Brock Krueger. For this project, Brock chose to work with colored pencils. In order to complete this drawing successfully, he took the time to learn how to layer and blend the colored pencils.
