Construction is well-underway across Wessington Springs, including on Main Street East. City employee Lucas VanEngelenburg and summer hires Robert Hine and Karter Mebius work on removing damaged material from the street as a result of heavy semi truck traffic. The prepared section of the street now awaits hot mix installation, designed to bear larger loads than the current surface.
The 2nd Street sewer and water infrastructure project spans from the high school to the elementary school. Underground work is projected for the next several weeks with road resurfacing to follow. Funding for the $1,607,000 2nd Street project is comprised of a Community Access Grant though the SDDOT, a SRF Grant, $162,911 in local American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, a SRF loan and funds from the city’s 2nd Penny fund.
The lowest bid to surface the Wessington Springs Elementary School parking lot was submitted by Feistner Gravel & Excavation and came in at $793,800.39 for all concrete surfacing. The school district will fund the parking lot with funds in capital outlay plus $190,000 previously set aside to take care of the rec center.
Work on the $1.6 million ag shop renovation and ag lab addition is full steam ahead, with crews working inside and on the south side of the building. A 10-year $1,000,000 capital outlay certificate will be used to fund the project.
