Dr. Seth Severtson Now Serving Patients Tuesdays
Growing up in Valley Springs competing in high school rodeo, Seth Severtson had his share of being bucked and bruised.
“One day I was moving an animal out of the back of a pickup and felt a twinge that just wouldn’t go away,” Severtson recalls. “I went to see a doctor and they said I needed surgery.”
At the time, he was working part time at a chiropractic office and told the chiropractor about it.
“He said, ‘let me adjust you, your body is designed to heal,’” Severtson said. “I learned that, when treated right, the body is self-healing and self-regulating. It was life changing.”
After studying animal science at SDSU and graduating in 2005, Severtson and his wife, Jessica moved to Davenport, IA to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic.
While in school, he learned that the body is intelligently designed, it is meant to heal itself.
“We aren’t treating the condition, we help the person’s body function better so it can heal itself. The power that made the body heals the body,” he explained. “We often talk about the ‘Three Ts’ — thoughts, traumas and toxins. Fundamentally, my job is to help people adapt to the stress of life. That is true health.”
After Severtson graduated his 3.5 year program in IA, he ended up in Dell Rapids, SD and had a chiropractic clinic there for eight years.
“Then my brother-in-law got sick, he farms outside of Mitchell. We wanted to be closer to family so we moved to the family farm for a couple of years. But in those two years I realized, God didn’t make me to be a farmer,” he laughed.
He soon returned to what he calls his true calling, caring for patients in his full-time practice in Mitchell which has been voted “Best of Mitchell” four times.
The long and winding path to a satellite clinic in Wessington Springs
“I’ve had Wessington Springs in my mind and on my heart for a long time,” Dr. Severtson shared. “I looked at Wessington Springs in 2008-2009 but things didn’t fall into place. Then in 2015-2016 there was a church looking for a pastor and I actually applied but could only devote part time.”
He explained that while the move to Wessington Springs didn’t happen at that time, he’s had patients from the Springs area that would drive down to Mitchell.
“I’ve have this thought that the world is going to get small again and that people are going to want local things. I looked at Springs, an hour away from larger communities that has that community-focus, community support and is self-sufficient. People in Springs live well and live bigger than the size town they are,” he reflected. “Instead of trying to draw someone to my town, I thought, why couldn’t I pack up for a day and go into a community.”
That dream became a reality last month when he signed a lease to rent space in the Wessington Springs Area Chamber and Development building on Main Street. He sees patients every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For the initial appointment, Dr. Severtson asks that patients call the Mitchell clinic at 605-292-2992. The first appointment and intake occurs in Mitchell and patients can be seen thereafter in the satellite office in Wessington Springs.
From neck pain, back pain and headaches to mental/emotional health, colicky babies and chronic pain of all types, Dr. Severtson said his upper cervical, low-force approach has made a positive difference in many of his patients’ lives.
“If I can’t find what’s going on and you aren’t getting results, we will find you some help,” he said. “If somebody is struggling with a health issue, I’d love to take a look at them.”
