This week, Wessington Springs High School (WSHS) is recognizing people in the FCCLA chapter. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. Kids all over the nation compete in competitive events from fashion design, early childhood education, culinary arts, entrepreneurship nutrition and more This year, Charlotte Mohling, FCCLA advisor, has 76 kids enrolled in FCCLA from grades 8-12 who compete at the state level.
This week, Kerstynn Heim, junior, Mercedes Jones, junior, Kaitlyn Braun, sophomore, Tregen Jensen, junior, Hayes Havlik, junior, Remie Roduner, junior, Jada Kolousek junior, Kendall Kolousek, sophomore, Jewel McGeough, sophomore, Ella Fagerhaug, junior, and Colby Flowers, junior have planned special activities.
Monday, we had pizza for the chapter and an ice cream bar for all kids in the high school. Wednesday, we honored educators and had a “Woot Woot Wagon” where Braun, Jensen and Jada Kolousek brought a variety of snacks and drinks into teachers classrooms for them to choose from and said “Woot Woot,” Then on Thursday we had Steal Your Heart Day where all the girls wore a red heart with their names, and if they talk to any boys, they have to give their heart up to the guy they talked to.
We then had Sweets for Your Sweetie at the basketball game – the proceeds went to the Sanford Children’s Hospital. We also had red snacks for members in Mrs. Mohling’s room for all FCCLA members.
Lastly, we ended the week with ice cream sundaes for all students in grades 7-8. We also hosted FCCLA trivia throughout the week and hid “funky” socks for kids to find.
Mohling was asked about her favorite thing about advising FCCLA and teaching Family and Consumer Science “My biggest reward is watching a member set a goal and achieve that goal. It might be facilitating a project that benefits a local group; running for a region, state, or national office; or competing in a STAR Event. Each accomplishment helps them set a future standard for success,” she shared.
“My favorite thing about teaching Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is knowing that I am impacting the future of my students. FCS teaches both essential skills and technical skills that all students will use in their future.”
All students in the high school appreciate and look up to Mrs. Mohling inside and outside of school. We couldn’t thank her more for her commitment to FCCLA. All kids had such a fun time participating in the events that were held this week and cannot wait to continue celebrating this week in upcoming years.
